While known throughout the land down under as the producer of Mobil synthetic engine oil and Mobil fully-synthetic oil, ExxonMobil is a corporation that cares about Australia’s local communities and economy as well. Although ExxonMobil is a large corporation with a presence all over the world, it still makes great efforts to become a part of small-town life in Australia. For example, ExxonMobil has been running one of the largest, most successful refineries in Australia for more than 60 years. The Altona Refinery in Victoria has become one of the most significant industrial facilities on the entire continent.
The Altona Refinery opened in Victoria in 1949, and in 2009, the company celebrated its 60th anniversary at the site. As a significant job provider and booster to the local economy, the Altona Refinery is one of the most important industrial facilities in Victoria and dare we say, in all of Australia. It provides half of Victoria’s fuel needs, so it is an extremely important factor in the local economy. In addition, the refinery pays millions of dollars each year in taxes to the local government, which in turn supports public entities such as schools, libraries and other publicly-run organizations. The refinery directly employs 350 people from the local area, and it indirectly supports thousands of other jobs in the greater Victoria region. Because ExxonMobil is committed to the communities that is resides in and serves, the Altona Refinery has donated millions of dollars over the years to local schools, hospitals and non-profit organizations. As one of the largest oil refineries in the country, it has a capacity of 80,000 barrels each day.
Many companies may claim that they are committed to providing for the local economy and serving the local residents, but ExxonMobil can prove it. The Altona Refinery, with more than 60 years in the state of Victoria, is living, breathing proof that ExxonMobil is dedicated to the local citizens while still dominating the global economy. This magnificent refinery, which provides hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars for the local economy, is a model for what ExxonMobil is trying to accomplish throughout the entire world. It is a refinery of which the residents of Victoria and all of Australia can be truly proud.

Thanks to people becoming more environmentally aware and gas prices being as high as they are, many travelers are trying to find the most efficient means of traveling without spending a fortune. Naturally, among the most fuel-efficient methods of traveling is using public transportation. However, this is not always the most practical way of doing things. Connections can be missed, and unless the traveler is traveling solo, it may prove to be too expensive to make it practical. For a traveler who is traveling by car, there are many ways to make the vehicle more fuel-efficient.

First of all, avoiding traffic will increase the fuel economy of any vehicle on the road. A great way to accomplish this is with a GPS which has traffic information or reviewing traffic reports. Common sense tricks also work, such as avoiding cities around the rush hour times. If traffic is inevitable, turning off the engine after thirty seconds or having a hybrid car that switches to electrical power while idling can make a huge difference.

Currently, highway fuel efficiency is tested at fifty-five miles per hour. Going any faster than that reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency drastically. Naturally, a traveler who is driving fifty-five on the highway will have greater fuel-efficiency than those who do not.

Finally, many people forget the small things that can harm fuel efficiency. Getting a tune-up and keeping up with routine maintenance, such as checking the tire pressure, can help maintain the maximum fuel-efficiency for the entire trip.

Australia by rail for less than £1 per day
Rail Australia alliance partners CountryLink, Great Southern Rail and Queensland Rail offer travellers to Australia great value and choice with 4 rail passes. All passes are 10% cheaper when prepurchased overseas, prior to arrival in Australia. Passes also provide great flexibility as well as value for money in allowing travellers to upgrade to other levels of accommodation by sector (surcharges applicable).

The national rail pass, Ausrail Pass, allows 6 months unlimited travel on all rail services operated by the 3 long distance rail operators as well as connecting coach services operated by CountryLink and Queensland Rail.
Great Southern Railâ??s Rail Explorer Pass allows unlimited travel for up to 6 months on Australiaâ??s most popular long distance trains The Ghan and Indian Pacific as well as The Overland. In addition, a special backpacker rate means that travellers can explore this vast continent in relaxed comfort for as little as £1 per day.

On the east coast you can also choose between 2 regional rail passes. The Backtracker Rail Pass allows travel throughout New South Wales linking Sydney with Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra as well as Broken Hill and Dubbo. CountryLink serves over 350 destinations throughout the region with rail and connecting coach services â?? all available to Backtracker Rail Pass holders over 14 days, 1, 3 or 6 months. The East Coast Discovery Pass allows travellers to travel in one direction between Melbourne and Cairns and various points inbetween. Travellers can choose between 6 different sector options including Sydney-Melbourne and Sydney-Brisbane for travel up to 6 months.

Luxury rail travel boom
Travelling on The Legendary Ghan continues to be popular with travellers from Australia and around the world. This 3 day / 2 night rail experience between Darwin in the Northern Territoryâ??s Top End and Adelaide, the capital of South Australia can be experienced in an authentic luxury Australian style called â??Platinum Serviceâ??.

In September 2008, Platinum Service was launched on The Ghan to great fanfare, becoming the most luxurious train in Australia and rivaling some of the great trains of the world. The inaugural departures in both directions were soon sold out. Platinum Service is now available on all departures of The Ghan for travel April through October. In November 2009, Platinum Service will be reintroduced onto the Indian Pacific for travel between Perth and Sydney via Adelaide on selected services through to the end March 2010.

The Success Story So Farâ?¦the UK leads the way
Platinum Service delighted over 800 guests in 2008 and by the end of September 2009 in excess of 3500 guests have travelled in Platinum Service. About a quarter of Platinum guests reside outside Australia with about 40% of those international travellers coming them from the UK.

Looking Forwardâ?¦
In January 2010, Platinum Service will also be available on the new outback adventure touring train offered by Great Southern Rail â?? The Southern Spirit, creating yet another milestone for this luxury level of service. The Southern Spirit will embark on two 11 days rail journeys in south eastern Australia starting with the The Grand Tour departing from Uluru on 9 January 2010.

Birdsville in Outback Queensland

Outback towns are the life-blood of the Outback. They form the heart of Outback communities and their social hub. Theyâ??re also full of characters â?? like publicans, drovers, shearers, smithies and the Aboriginal stockmen; along with the station owners and graziers who come to town to stock up on supplies.

Itâ??s here youâ??ll get the opportunity to immerse yourself in the life of Outback locals and meet some real Aussie characters. Revel in the mateship, have a good belly laugh and join in some truly Aussie events such as fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Buy a ticket in a meat raffle, play â??Two-upâ?? , or place a bet on a cane toad race.

Youâ??ll find our Outback towns out past the spinifex of Inglewood, past the cactus near Goondiwindi, out beyond Moree where the galahs peck at the cottonseed by the side of the road. Way, way out where the fences and telegraph poles have ceased to be; where the horizon stretches out to touch a pale-blue sky. The â??Outbackâ?? may be hard to define, but youâ??ll know it when you see it.

Red dust roads across the country lead to shanty towns full of character and heritage, where the locals wear Akubra hats and riding boots. Our incredible history has been recorded in towns such as Longreach, Winton, Blackall and Barcaldine in central Queensland, and the NSW country towns of Warialda and Moree which, with their wooden and tin shopfront awnings, resemble ‘Wild West’ towns of the 1800s.

Our sheep and wheat growing country is full of straightlaced retro towns such as Manilla, Condoblin and Goondiwindi which seem to have been preserved from the 1960s.

There are the iconic mining towns of Broken Hill, Silverton, Tennant Creek and Kalgoorlie, and the one-horse towns like William Creek, Birdsville and Daly Waters, which are little more than a pub, a petrol pump and a few houses.

Thereâ??s Birdsville, the tiny settlement on the edge of the Simpson Desert at the northern end of the notorious and dangerous Birdsville Track. And Tenterfield, the birthplace of Peter Allen, the â??Boy From Ozâ?? who sang about the Tenterfield Saddler.

Then thereâ??s Bourke, the dry and dusty outback town in far north-west NSW which provoked author Henry Lawson to write after his visit in 1893, â??If you know Bourke, you know Australiaâ?. ‘Back oâ?? Bourke’ is more than a geographic location; itâ??s part of the Australian language and part of our folklore. So, pack up your swag and come out the back of beyond to the â??back of beyond’.
